Discover why Painters, Photographers, Sculptors & Artists of all types are joining Praxis, and how it’s helping them...
You can be a starving artist who sacrifices making money in order to focus on your art. You barely get by, just cover your expenses, and no one knows who you are and you’re having trouble selling your art.
Or you can choose “sell out” and create art merely for selling and making money. You swallow your pride, treat it solely as a business, but go to sleep at night feeling unfulfilled and empty.
You feel invisible and unknown without any followers, collectors, or support on social media and in the art world.
You feel overwhelmed with what to do, how to reach galleries, get noticed, find collectors, or run a full-time art practice.
You’ve put a lot of effort, but everything you’ve tried hasn’t worked or has gotten you very little results.
You feel pressured to create art that doesn’t align with your style or purpose in order to pay the bills and keep the lights on.
It’s not your fault.
Society and the art world have sold us a lie that the artist is supposed to be “starving”.
And that in order to be the next big artist, you have to create art, die broke, and THEN people will buy your art.
I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like a plan I want to take.
Instead, there is a better path. A path I discovered to earn a full-time income without selling my soul as an artist and creator.
Once I discovered the path of the thriving artist, I was able to get discovered, get my art out in the world, and go to sleep at night knowing I didn’t have to sell out to do it.
And when I showed this path to other artists, they were able to do the same.
It became a system that allowed artists of all types, backgrounds, cultures, and skill levels to finally go from invisible to recognized.
If you’ve struggled to become a thriving artist, it’s not your fault.
You’ve been sold a lie about how an artist should be, but we’re going to show you a better way.
My name is Brainard Carey.
I have been helping artists for over a decade get discovered and become thriving artists in the art world.
Once I discovered the path of the Thriving Artist, I realized there was a better way to build a thriving career as an artist.
I’ve written five books for artists in between other books. My most popular best-sellers are: “Making it in the Art World”, and “The Art World Demystified”.
I enjoy being an educator as well as a successful artist.
After going to SUNY Purchase for my BFA, the world became my master’s degree, and my love and passion developed for teaching other artists like myself the steps on how to navigate the mysterious art world.
After college, I opened a gallery and began publishing a print magazine as well. I ran both businesses for a decade.
After 10 years of experience and in-depth learning of the business of selling art, I moved back to Manhattan and opened up his storefront studio on 10th Street.
When I got into my first major shows, The Whitney Biennial and The Greater New York show at PS1, I began to consult and help artists.
Since then, I have also interviewed over 1600 artists, writers, and curators from all over the art world on the Yale University radio program, “The Lives of the Artists”.
The interviews with those artists have informed and taught me how artists from all places in the world and all different mediums are able to achieve recognition.
My goal is to be able to offer as much help as possible to artists to navigate the rocky waters of the art world.
Get discovered and become a known artist in the art world on your terms without selling out who you are.
Feel less overwhelmed and have the clarity to reach galleries, get noticed, find collectors, and run a full-time art practice.
Get more results with less struggle, and wake up each morning feeling like you’re making progress in your art career.
Create art that aligns with your style and purpose without sacrificing who you are or how you make your art.
Earn a full-time income from your art and keep your studio busy with new collectors and buyers.
Learn how to build a list of collectors interested in buying your art and grow a following on social media.
Over the last 10 years, I’ve created a place for artists to learn all they need to go from unknown and invisible to recognized. To go from starving to thriving.

Each month, you’ll gain access to these new expert talks as they are released.
An editor will personally edit your artist statement and bio, so you can stand out from the crowd and wow grant agencies and galleries. So instead of wondering if your statement or bio is good enough, one of our expert editors will help you optimize it.

More good news: A collector who has collected my work in the past, responded to my letter asking him to invest in my dream to create a new body of work by purchasing $2100 worth of works from the studio rather than simply donating money towards my project. I'm excited. That means I've raised a total of $7,175 since starting the course last month. Thank you for the motivation and pragmatic advice, Brainard!"
- Gabrielle Senza, Artist

"So, I'm completing the course at a GLACIAL pace, because it's a busy producing season for me - but, EXCITING NEWS...
My dance company has the opportunity to put roots down in a little studio space in a prime location. It was a time sensitive offer and we do not have money in the bank. I've been cultivating donors with a collaborator to make this happen, but still hadn't made that solo ask. Well, yesterday I was chatting with someone and it organically happened! She made a $1337 dollar donation to pay for a month's operating expenses! SO PUMPED and feeling less afraid.!"
- Sarah Duclos, Dancer, Artistic Director at Neoteric Dance Collabortive
"After taking Brainard's course on sponsors and patrons, I mustered up the courage and asked a patron and received a check for $5,000 to aid my studio practice.
- Karen Hampton, Artist
"I just got my first PayPal donation!!"
- Tim DeChristopher, Artist
"Hi Brainard! Sent out my first letter (email) the other day and was promised $1500 by October. "
- Vasia Markides, Artist
"...My neighbor made it down the mountain this afternoon on a quest for a new heat tape - but none existed. He picked up my mail…brought it to my studio where I was working and offered me a ride down to my truck now that the road was plowed enough to get it back home. I poured through the mail, my tummy flip-flopped when I found an envelope marked "Cla-------k." After your advise to Google (name withheld) I decided that being the sole patron of the Bison Bench was unlikely since he doesn't make as much $ as I thought. I had quietly settled on a wished-for number in my mind for the check to be….knowing that it could be anything and afraid to be disappointed but right in my hand was a check written for the wished-for number……………….$10,000.00…!!!!!!
BINGO!
My blue mood blew away with the same force of the snow flurries outside!!!
I am taking a treat to my neighbor right now before settling into my cozy cabin with running water and a grin.
I can hardly wait to continue my fundraising efforts tomorrow. I plan to make the goal of $20,000 before the end of the year (and shop for NEW tires ASAP)
Cheers!"
- Amber-Jean, Artist
"OMG! Just received my first donation - $1000!"

- Amy Williams, Artist
"I just had my first studio visit and she took 6 paintings - Also A show in February"
- Ann Friedlander
"I just set up a coffee date with a professor from Italy to talk over the Light show you posted. Thanks for the info and inspiration to use info as a tool to make deeper connections within my community :D
- Noah Saunders
"I have news to share and I hope this is an encouragement to all. I did the course work and first worked on fine tuning the website and bio. thanks to all that helped but this is really a shout out to Brainard's suggestions. THEY WORK. I am happy to share I just achieved my third gallery and each gallery is a step up in my career. Do what he says and it will work for you. THANK YOU Brainard for sharing your knowledge.
- Ct Cummins
"I took some of the things I learned in your class and applied them! I had a studio visit with the owner of a small gallery on the lower east side. She said that she was interested in working with me... Also, I had the visit today, she said she is booked until June (month long shows). We talked a little about designing a solo show, and that she would want to see what I had planned."
- Justin Cloud
"Your techniques and advice/support was very helpful. After a 2 day business trip to SF from LA and contacting 15 SF galleries and 4 curators for appointments I connected to the right one, and 2 weeks later she offered me a solo show for next month because her other artist needed more time and she had the slot open & knew I had the work. So again, thank you."
- Carole Silverstein
